50 km/hr winds from the north, a wind chill of -23, snow and ice covered trails ....what a day for a run!
I am thinking this was the coldest Tour de Airdrie! even though I haven't done it other years, I am sure it was the coldest! The kids and I started about 5 minutes late....because we were, well we were just late, it could possibly have the kids filling their pockets with little choc bars :) that were set out with granola bars, juice, bananas, etc. (Actually I think that was just Mike) anyway... we managed to start behind everyone else. The kids did pretty good for the first little bit and I will admit I lured them to quicken up a little by telling them I'd give them gum. This ofcourse worked only once. They were busy having fun pushing each other into the snow banks...really it was just a walk for them to finish and not a race at all.....they had fun and even in the horrible weather. (so that is good!) Finally I decided to just leave them behind and I pretty much walked the 5 k. I did a little slow jogging...not wanting to mess up my ankle (any more) or get anymore shin splints than I have had this past week from my ankle.....with such poor conditions slipping on the ice would be easy. The last 50 meters of the path was snow up to your shins! ....no one was really sprinting to the finish line.
I am sure once the kids turned north into the wind it slowed them down! Julia, Dominique, and Mike finished just around 1 hour and I did around 45 minutes.
We had a good time....kids enjoyed being a part of things and having a bbq after. I was just happy not to hurt myself anymore but still do 5 k.
